Early Phonics and Reading
From the time children start school in Reception they are taught phonics using the Department for Education’s Letters and Sounds phonic resource.
Alongside phonics, pupils learn a range of complementary strategies to help them decode tricky and / or high frequency words and to get a strong sense of meaning from the text they are reading. They are encouraged to make predictions and used contextual clues to support and enhance their understanding.
Children are taught, and their reading skills assessed, through Guided Group and whole class reading sessions in Key Stage One and as a whole class in Key Stage Two and which take place for all children at least once per week. Individual reading support is provided to pupils in addition to the guided taught sessions.

For further reading development the school uses Bug Club together with a variety of other books from which the children may choose to develop their confidence as readers. Children are encouraged to read widely from a range of fiction and non-fiction texts including books of special or personal interest as they begin to put their phonics learning into practice.
