Modern Foreign Languages
sAs the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we aim at Witchampton CofE First School to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. We endeavour to foster a love of learning another language, so that all children leaving our school will be on their way to learning a language other than English. At Witchampton CofE First School, we believe strongly in the benefit of this and have therefore implemented regular teaching of French for Years 3 and 4 (lower Key Stage 2). Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children (Year 1 and Year 2) will receive an introduction to French, as we encourage and support a whole school approach.
There are two underlying principles underpinning the Schemes of Work:
· children should enjoy their early years of learning French and to value the sights and sounds of France, the rhythm of the language and the real pleasure that can be gained from contact with the written word.
· children should make real and measurable progress in their learning through innovative activities, challenging tasks and the desire to understand more and more as they listen to, speak and read French.
Throughout the year, listening, speaking, reading and writing skills are developed at word, sentence and text level, as well as dictionary skills, spelling skills, language learning strategies, knowledge about language, and intercultural understanding. Children have regular opportunities to listen to, and to join in singing, traditional and modern children’s songs and to learn authentic finger rhymes. Children make “real time” virtual visits to Paris via internet webcams, and have regular opportunities to become familiar with scenes around France. They also become familiar with the paintings of famous French artists.
This is an overview of the Scheme of Work which is adapted for Years 3 and Year 4:
